Holiday celebrations can bring connection and joy alongside changes in routine, family pressures, financial stress, and exposure to alcohol or other substances. Thoughtful preparation can help protect recovery.

PLAN AHEAD

Consider potential triggers, how long to stay at events, transportation, an exit plan, and a supportive contact. Choose environments and boundaries that support your well-being.

HOLIDAY RECOVERY CHECKLIST

Identify triggers and coping strategies; set boundaries about alcohol and substance use; arrange transportation; identify a trusted support person; maintain treatment and recovery activities; plan for emotional discomfort; and recognize when professional support is needed.

COMMUNICATE BOUNDARIES

A simple response such as “No, thank you. I’m choosing what supports my health and well-being” may be enough. You do not owe others personal treatment details. You can protect your recovery and still enjoy the season. Both can be true.

MAINTAIN ROUTINES AND SUPPORT

Prioritize rest, nutrition, physical activity, scheduled appointments, peer support, and recovery meetings. If traveling, discuss treatment scheduling and resources with your care team.

RECOGNIZE EMOTIONAL TRIGGERS

Grief, loneliness, anxiety, and family conflict can become more noticeable during holidays. Mindfulness, journaling, relaxation, and supportive conversations may help. Seek professional assistance if distress becomes difficult to manage.

IF YOU EXPERIENCE A SETBACK

A return to use does not erase prior progress, but it can carry serious medical risks, including overdose after reduced tolerance. Alcohol or certain medication withdrawal can be dangerous. Seek timely professional evaluation and do not manage severe withdrawal alone. Call 911 for suspected overdose or immediate medical emergencies.

BEYOND THE HOLIDAYS

Recovery involves building coping skills, supportive relationships, and long-term stability. STS may provide counseling, intensive outpatient services, peer support, psychiatric care when appropriate, and case management based on individual needs. Your recovery deserves attention and support in every season.

HEAL. GROW. THRIVE.
