Understanding the Condition

What It Is

Mental health and substance use challenges can occur together and affect multiple areas of life. STS addresses both through an integrated, whole-person approach combining individualized counseling, intensive outpatient treatment, psychiatric care when appropriate, peer recovery support, and case management.

Recognizing the Signs

Signs You Might Notice

These are common signs, not a diagnosis. If you recognise yourself in several of them, an integrated assessment can help.

Using alcohol or other substances to cope with anxiety, depression, or emotional distress.

Experiencing worsening emotional or mental health symptoms when reducing or stopping substance use.

Experiencing challenges in relationships, employment, or overall health related to co-occurring conditions.

Experiencing worsening mental health symptoms following alcohol or other substance use.

Experiencing limited or short-term improvement when treatment addresses only one condition.

Your Care Journey

What to Expect During Care

Your first visit is an integrated assessment with a licensed clinician, about 60 to 90 minutes, that looks at your mental health and substance use together. From there, one team builds one plan, which may include IOP, therapy, psychiatric care, peer support and case management. Everyone involved in your care works from the same plan and reviews progress with you.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which do you treat first, mental health or substance use?

Both, together. Research and experience show integrated treatment works better than treating one at a time.

Do I need two separate programs?

No. One team coordinates your care, so you are not passed between services.

What if I have been treated before and it did not last?

That is common when only one condition was addressed. An integrated plan often makes the difference.

Is integrated treatment covered by insurance?

Many insurance plans cover outpatient and intensive outpatient treatment. We work with a growing number of plans, offer self-pay and sliding-scale fee options, and check your coverage before you start.
